Use of the Building for the Students and Staff in the Cluster

A Cluster Building

Årstadveien 17 brings together different academic enviroments, staff, and students. The building is designed to encourage us to use the social zones and common areas, and to provide students with excellent facilities for active, collaborative learning. Everyone who uses the building must do their part to ensure a good study and workday in this fantastic facility!

See a presentation for new students about opportunites and guidelines in Årstadveien 17 here.

Access and Security

Outside opening hours, access to the building requiers and access card. To avoid triggering the alarm after 22:00, the card must be activated on the reader at the entrance.

For students

We want to create a «sticky campus» across student groups – so you are welcome to use both the building and the garden!

Meeting Room Booking for students

Students may book avalible meeting rooms for up to 2 hours at a time as a «walk-up meeting.» this is done via the screen located by the door of each room. In addition, there are many places in the building´s common areas that can be used. Meeting rooms are intended for student group work. The larger rooms are suitble for videoconferences, and all rooms allow you to connect your PC to a shared screen.

If you want to work individually, please use the reading room spaces at you faculty or the shared common areas. We therfore ask students not to use meeting rooms for individual work.
UiB students can find information about booking reading spaces here:

Kitchen Areas

On the ground floor, there is a dedicated kitchenette for students.
From 11:30 ro 12:30, the kitchen areas on the 2nd, 3rd and 4th floors are reserved for staff working in the building. Students may use the facilites, but cups and plates should be placed in the dishwasher on the same floor where you got it. This prevents a buildup of dishes on the ground and 1st floors.
Refigerators and coffee machines are reserved for staff.

Students are welcome to use all common areas, but we kindly ask everyone to keep the spaces clean and tidy, just like staff. We all share the responsibility for loading/unloading the dishwashers, turning them on and off, removing food waste from meeting and teaching rooms, and wiping down dirty tables.

Rest Rooms

Students can contact their institue´s study administration to get access to a rest room, located on the ground floor by the teaching room «Midgard».

UiB has a website where you can see ndars of the different rooms: Alrek romkalender

The beautiful garden at Årstadveien 17 is open to everyone, both inside and outside the building. We have planted five plum trees, and we hope you will enjoy harvesting the fruit when the plums are ripe. Spring and autumn workdays are organized, where staff and neighbors are welcome to help care of the trees and learn more about fruit tree maintenace.

The plum tree project is a part of KORO´s art program in and around the building, created by the atrist Amber Ambett, and the trees even have their own website. Learn more about the plum trees at Alrek (here), or find them on Instagram by searching for «Plum Trees at Alrek».
